MORE SECURITY TIPS

FOUR P's TO EVERY SCAM

The Federal Trade Commission has identified four elements of most scams.

PRETEND

Fraudsters pretend to be from an organization you know or trust, like the Credit Union, a government agency, or your utility provider. They use technology to spoof phone numbers so the call or text looks legitimate.

PROBLEM / PRIZE

Fraudsters say there's a problem with your account, your device has a virus, or you won a prize. This is to catch you off guard and make you want to act.

PRESSURE

Scammers want you to act fast before you can think. They threaten legal trouble or say your device is corrupted.

PAY

Be suspicious of requests to pay a specific way, like cryptocurrency, money wires, or gift cards.
